缸又被称作吉利缸，和平缸，青铜缸。是其时故宫里的一种防火设备，铜缸从种类上分有青铜缸，紫铜大缸，黄铜大缸等。

据《大清会典》记载，宫中共有大缸308口。但世事沧桑，由于各种原因，如今只剩下231口了。这些大缸共分为铁、铜和鎏金铜三种。

古紫铜缸

一般来讲，铁缸是明代时铸造的；铜缸有明代的，也有清代的；鎏金铜缸则均是清代铸造的。其间，以铜缸居多，所以人们习惯地称宫中的大缸为铜缸。现代院子景象营建上常常摆放几口大铜缸，种上荷花里边放上金鱼既给鱼儿营建了一个温馨的家，也确保了整体居室环境的安全。
